AG Murrill's Office arrests Houma man for Computer Fraud after accessing business's computer system to obtain confidential information

Attorney General Liz Murrill's Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (LBI) recently received a request for assistance from Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office regarding allegations of computer intrusion at a local business.

Sheriff Craig Webre had received a complaint from a local business owner who reported concerns that a former trusted employee, 30-year-old Garrett Garza, of Greenway Avenue in Houma, had unlawfully accessed the business’s computer system for purposes to obtain confidential information.

During this investigation, LBI agents discovered digital evidence linking Garza to multiple unauthorized attempts and successful intrusions of the victim’s computer network. Evidence also indicates that Garza illegally accessed the computer network for purposes to obtain confidential information (defraud) or conduct surveillance of the victim’s business activities.

Representatives confirmed the company’s computer network contained over six million dollars in confidential information, which Garza gained access to when he unlawfully entered the victim’s system.

Pursuant to this investigation, LBI agents obtained an arrest warrant for Garza.

He was subsequently apprehended by Houma Police Department and booked at the Terrebonne Parish Prison.

Garza is charged with:

  • 14 Count(s) of 14:27-14:73.5 -- Attempted Computer Fraud -- (Felony)
  • 4 Count(s) of 14:73.5 -- Computer Fraud -- (Felony)

Garza has since been released on bond pending charges in Lafourche Parish regarding this investigation.

Our investigation continues.
