Louisiana Supreme Court reverses the disqualification of the Attorney General from representing the State in post-conviction relief cases
Today, the Louisiana Supreme Court reversed a district court's ruling which claimed that Attorney General Liz Murrill and her office had no authority to represent the State in post-conviction relief cases involving inmates on Death Row. The Louisiana Supreme Court clarified what we've always known to be true, that the Attorney General undeniably has authority to participate in these cases. Our office is assisting district attorneys in defending these cases across the State to ensure victims of these heinous crimes get justice and consistent applications of the law, and that district courts correctly apply the law.
“I’m grateful the Louisiana Supreme Court put to rest this frivolous claim regarding the Attorney General’s authority to defend these cases in State or federal court. This was another attempt by death penalty lawyers to delay these proceedings and I’m glad the Louisiana Supreme Court shut it down," said Attorney General Liz Murrill.
